The summer madness is over, the days are getting shorter, the mornings are getting cooler, the sky is turning pink as the sun sets… Autumn is just around the corner!
But here in the Basque Country, autumn also often rhymes with the return of more powerful swells and great waves in prospect!
It’s also the time to test your progress from the summer spent surfing small waves ; It’s time to challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone! In short, it’s THE time of the year to surf in France!
On the other hand, it’s getting colder and colder and we have to take the full wetsuits out…. And now that the COVID is behind us, why don’t we go surfing elsewhere in the world? Just to surf without wetsuits, in a swimsuit, in warm water, somewhere else than in France?
AUTUMN SURFING DESTINATIONS
Surfing in Fuerteventura - Canary islands
An easy solution from France for surfing in the sun, the island of Fuerteventura is the ideal destination to get away for a few days at lower costs.
This Spanish island will please both surfers and their families: deserted beaches, small villages, warm water, and good restaurants.
Surfing is possible all year round, with spots for all levels.
The wind can be fickle, but apart from that you should be able to enjoy it at any time of the year!
For the practical side, remember to book a car so you can move from spot to spot easily.
Surfing in Sardinia - Italy
Sardinia is a great surfing destination, even though it is not well known yet !
Located in the south of Italy, this region still offers a lot of sun in autumn. There are great surf spots for all levels.
A surf spot in the land of pasta, burrata and spritz…. we say HELL YES!
Beware of the tides though, as most of the spots are reef breaks.
Surfing in Morocco
More and more popular in autumn, Morocco is on a roll. But we understand why…
Surf spots are numerous, especially around the Taghazout area towards the famous Anchor Point.
In the north of the bay, the wave is the most demanding, and the more you go south the more it becomes “intermediate”. Ideal therefore, for all levels.
Numerous surf camps are set up here to help you discover little-known spots, and those best suited to your level.
The bay of Imsouane, a little further north, is also very popular in this season. Perhaps the longest right of your life… It breaks infinitely ! So much so that you’ll have to get out of the water and walk in order to get back to the peak.
Surfing in Costa Rica
The Pacific coast of Costa Rica offers great surfing opportunities in autumn!
Either further north in Guanacaste, at the beaches of Tamarindo and Playa Negra, or a little further south towards Santa Teresa where you will also find a large number of yoga retreats.
If you’ve ever been to Biarritz to surf with us in the summer, you’ve probably met Manu. He has been living in Costa Rica for more than 20 years now and owns a small surfcamp (Uhaina cabinas) that offers accommodation + surf lessons. He’ll even prepare you some good tips… I’m still licking my lips only thinking about it!
A real corner of paradise!
