Where to surf on the Basque Coast ?

We don’t teach you anything, the Basque Coast has become a great surfing capital, more and more famous for its numerous spots.

Whatever your level, you will find what you are looking for!

The charms vary according to the cities, the atmospheres also, are different. Feel free to explore, they are waiting for you!

From the city of Anglet in the North to the bay of Hendaye in the South, more than thirty surf spots are available to you!

Don’t hesitate to go for a ride with your van / car or even by bus, you will surely find a peak that will please you.

If you don’t have a board, no problem! There are many rental companies on the roadside or near the spots.

  • No less than 11 beaches on a distance of 4,5 km!!
  • Only beach breaks more or less powerful : rather fast waves on most of the spots.
  • Level : intermediate to experienced

La Grande Plage

  • “Main” beach, located in the city center, in front of the Casino of Biarritz
  • Several peaks : rights and lefts
  • Level : beginner to intermediate
  • Surfing at low tide or half tide
  • To be preferred when the wind is South oriented

La Côte des Basques

  • Mythical beach of the Basque Coast, elected most beautiful beach in France by Tripadvisor in 2017
  • Multi peaks beach break: waves are usually softer North of the bay and on the contrary more powerful towards the South of the beach
  • Level : beginner to intermediate – Ideal to start surfing !
  • Surfing at low tide or half tide
  • To be preferred when the wind is North oriented

  • Surfing at low or mid-tide, sometimes at high tide

Les ALCYONS

  • Very powerful reef break
  • Level: wave reserved for experienced surfers
  • Surf at low tide

CENITZ

  • Reef break
  • Level : intermediate to experienced
  • Surfing at mid-tide and high tide : Beware of rocks at low tide !
  • One left and two rights, one of which is reserved for experienced surfers

Lafitenia

  • Reef break: rights
  • Level: experienced
  • A good fallback solution during strong swell but be careful with the world and the level in the water !
  • Surf at low tide

ERROMARDIE

  • Beach break and reef break
  • Level : intermediate on the left side of the beach, experienced on the right. The wave to the left can be considered as a fallback solution in case of strong swell.
  • Surfing at mid-tide, or even high tide: beware of rocks at low tide!
